Wimbly Lu

Singapore has the most amazing little pockets of hidden food establishments and I think this only goes to show the lengths we go to for good food. Wimbly Lu, primarily a dessert and chocolate cafe, resides whimsically along Jalan Riang, right in the middle of a secluded private estate. At slightly over a year old, they continue to draw crowds in for their quality yet very reasonably priced handmade dessert and chocolate creations.

This wasn’t my first visit here but I was totally captivated with their dreamy decor in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, so pretty and shimmery as the light gets relfected from the glass baubles on to those exposed brick walls. I prefer the cosy back alley area with the lighted beams, high ceilings and tiny ‘backyard’. Spaces are limited in the narrow shophouse space and reservations are definitely recommended!

A dedicated dessert kitchen where you can often catch the pastry chef and chocolatier in action.

Tiramisu, $6.50. This was pretty decent, the mascarpone cheese in their version is slightly denser and that made for a somewhat creamier, ‘heavier’ bite. The sponge fingers were gorgeously moist from soaking in coffee, with a distinct smell of it too. The liqueur level may be a tiny bit strong for some but the alcoholic in me was very satisfied.

Molten Lava Cake, $6. Freshly baked upon order, please expect to wait a little while for this. The thin baked shell broke easily under our spoons and gave way to it’s dark molten core of velvety chocolate. Love that this wasn’t sweet, even had that little hint of bitterness from dark chocolate. My only gripe was while the cake on top was nicely baked, the sides were pretty tough and I had to scrape it away from the ramekin.

Variety-wise, there is a comfortable selection of other cakes, crepes, waffles, pancakes and handmade chocolate truffles so pretty sure everyone’s sweet tooth will be happy! Other than desserts, they have also added a small savoury menu offering light bites like Fries and limited mains like Cottage Pie and Lasagne. Brunch is also available on weekends.

In a dessert nutshell, I love Wimbly Lu. Comfortable ambience, trusty dessert choices and very affordable. I would be there all the time if it was more accessible but I guess that correlates to increase in crowds and they are already as popular as it is. This one’s here to stay, and you are really missing out if you haven’t been there!
